WOODS OF ISLE & MORE TO COME THIS SUMMER

I am incredibly excited and humbled by all the feedback I’ve been getting on launching Girl of 10,000 Lakes. This is a place where style and beauty cross paths with adventures in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and other whimsical places. I love the great outdoors, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle journalism, so I’m intersecting the four. I’m still in the midst of gathering content for the coming months, but planning the official launch mid-summer. Eek! Excitement all around!

Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see on Girl of 10,000 Lakes:

I’m back from a weekend of hiking, bonfires, s’mores, and cute little cabins. It’s my third year back at Wildwood Haven and believe me, it’s definitely worthy of being called “haven.” This is my hubby Nick’s aunt and uncle’s super magical cabin-like home surrounded by several miniature wood cabins. If you’ve ever been to Isle, Minnesota, you know it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump to Lake Mille Lacs. #WalleyeCapitol

Besides being close to one of the state’s most recognized fishing destinations, there’s plenty of adventure in the many acres of forest. Lucky for us, it’s morel hunting season. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side for foraging this weekend. We never came across any of those brain-like, spongey mushrooms, but we did find some other treasures.

Several old glass apothecaries and bottles were buried a few inches in the ground. These were deep into the woods, away from the trail. One of the bottles says “Hoff’s Liniment – Goodrich Drug Co. – Anoka, Minn.” WHAT in the WORLD is liniment? Well, according to the interwebs, it’s a remedy for everything from rheumatism to sore throat, cold in the head, cold on the lungs, quinsy (what is that?), frostbites, chilblains(?), chapped hands, internal pains, etc. Wow. Cure for it all! According to Goodrich Pharmacy, liniment was stated to be “Good for Man or Beast.” Ha!

While there wasn’t any all-cure liquid left in the bottle, it did make me feel like I accomplished something. I’ve never seen or tasted a morel mushroom, but I promise one day I will do both.
